11 The Garnock Floods -
(see map)
The Scottish Wildlife Trust, Garnock Floods is an extensive,
low lying floodplain of semi-improved pasture and wetland
depressions by the River Garnock. This is an excellent
reserve for wildfowl, especially during the winter months
when numbers of ducks are attracted to the Garnock
Estuary and the nearby wetlands. Light grazing by horses
keeps the pools open with the muddy fringes particularly
favoured by waders such as snipe. Wildfowl such as
wigeon graze the short turf.
